How to get to Puerto Natales from Punta Arenas: bus, airport transfer and which tour to take the next day (2026)

How to get to Puerto Natales from Punta Arenas: bus, airport transfer and which tour to take the next day (2026)

Punta Arenas airport sits 20 km outside the city and Puerto Natales is 247 km up Route 9, about 3 hours by bus. Which buses to take, whether the direct airport bus is worth it, and the real decision: sleep in Punta Arenas and do Paine as a full day, or move to Natales.

Seasonal pricing: the checkout has the final word. The tours and the transfer in this guide are booked on Tuki and charged in Chilean pesos (CLP) at the price the checkout shows; bus fares, car rental and park fees are market orders of magnitude as of September 2026, not Tuki prices.

Nearly every Torres del Paine trip starts the same way: you land at Presidente Carlos Ibáñez del Campo airport, about 20 km north of Punta Arenas on Route 9, and Puerto Natales is 247 km further north on that same road, roughly 3 hours by bus. The first leg is covered by the airport–city transfer at CLP $15,000 per person, or you go straight onto a bus if your flight lines up with a departure that stops at the airport. What nobody tells you when you buy the bus ticket: if you sleep in Punta Arenas the park is still doable in one day (panoramic full day CLP $90,000 or Base Torres CLP $120,000, pick-up between 03:30 and 05:00), and if you sleep in Natales the same tour costs CLP $60,000 and leaves at 07:00. None of the five includes the CONAF park entry: it is bought separately, online.

Flight landing before 15:00: bus to Natales the same day and the park tour next morning for CLP $60,000. Afternoon or evening flight: sleep in Punta Arenas and choose between the early bus or a full day straight from there (more hours in the van, no hotel change).

Punta Arenas Airport Transfer — CLP $15,000

This is the short leg, from the airport to your accommodation within the urban area of Punta Arenas (or the reverse when you fly out), run by Caminos Tours. The listing says the service runs every day for every flight, that the driver waits wearing company clothing, and that for the return they pick you up up to three hours before an international flight and two hours before a domestic one. The drive is about 25 minutes; the exact pick-up time is arranged over WhatsApp the day before. It earns its place when you land at night, when the day's last bus has gone, or when you would rather drop the bags at the hotel before heading north.

The 5 ways to reach Puerto Natales from the airport, with time and price

 • Direct bus from the airport — on the order of CLP $8,000 to $15,000 per person, 3 to 3.5 hours — Bus-Sur's northbound buses call at the airport; it exists in season and you have to check that day's timetable
 • Airport → city transfer + bus from the company's office — CLP $15,000 for the transfer (25 minutes) plus the fare, 3 to 3.25 hours on the road — the usual combination when you want to stop at the hotel or the flight does not match a direct departure
 • Rental car from the airport — 247 km on Route 9, 3 hours non-stop — fully paved, strong wind and frost on cold mornings; worth it if you will drive yourself around the park afterwards
 • Night in Punta Arenas + bus next morning — the first bus leaves around 07:00 and arrives before 10:30 — too late for a tour that day, so the park moves to the day after
 • Night in Punta Arenas + full day to Torres del Paine from there — CLP $90,000 panoramic or CLP $120,000 Base Torres — pick-up between 03:30 and 05:00, back between 20:30 and 23:30, no hotel change

The airport is 20 km from Punta Arenas, and Natales is 247 km away

LATAM, Sky and JetSMART fly Santiago–Punta Arenas non-stop in about 3.5 hours. The airport sits at kilometre 20 of Route 9 North, which means it is already on the way to Puerto Natales: drive into the city and back out again and you add 40 km. So the first decision is not "which bus" but "do I go into Punta Arenas or not": if the timetable fits, the direct bus saves you the transfer and a good hour; if you land hungry or after 18:00, going into town is the sensible move. From there Natales is 247 km north on a paved, straight Route 9 across the steppe: 3 to 3.25 hours by bus, with a short halfway stop for toilets and coffee.

Punta Arenas – Puerto Natales buses: companies, frequency and terminals

Three companies run the route year-round: Bus-Sur, Buses Fernández and Buses Pacheco. In season (October to April) there are departures almost hourly between roughly 07:00 and 21:00; Bus-Sur lists more than fourteen a day in its season timetable, and in winter that drops to a handful. Fares run on the order of CLP $8,000 to $15,000 per leg depending on company, seat type and season; in January and February book a few days ahead, because the morning buses fill up.

Punta Arenas has no single bus station: each company leaves from its own office, all a few blocks from the centre (Bus-Sur at Avenida Colón 842, Buses Pacheco at Avenida Colón 900, Buses Fernández at Armando Sanhueza 745); if you buy online (recorrido.cl, kupos.cl, busbud) the ticket tells you where it leaves from. In Puerto Natales everyone arrives at the Terminal Rodoviario on Avenida España 1455, about 10 blocks from the centre. The same terminal is where the regular buses to the park and to El Calafate depart.

Direct bus from the airport: it exists, but check that day's timetable

Bus-Sur's Punta Arenas–Puerto Natales buses stop at the airport, and in season the ticket platforms sell the trip with "Punta Arenas – Aeropuerto PUQ" as the origin (Bus-Sur and Austral Bus show up as operators). You buy the ticket with the airport as origin, walk out of arrivals, and the bus pulls up on the forecourt some 20 to 25 minutes after leaving its city office; from there it is about 3 hours to Natales. What you cannot assume is that a bus will be waiting for every flight: these are the same departures as the Punta Arenas–Natales timetable, with gaps of an hour or more, and in low season maybe two or three a day. Rule of thumb: if there is a bus within 60 to 90 minutes of your landing, take it; if not, the transfer into town and the bus from the office cost you no real time. And since a ticket for a fixed hour is lost if the flight is late, plenty of people buy the bus only once they have landed.

By rental car: Route 9, wind and fuel

Punta Arenas has the widest rental choice in Chilean Patagonia, with desks at the airport and in town. Route 9 is paved end to end, the limit is 100 km/h and the drive is a relaxed 3 hours. What is different is the wind, with gusts that push the car around on the steppe, and frost on cold mornings in spring and autumn: leave after 09:00 if you can and avoid driving at night, more because of fatigue and guanacos crossing than the road itself. Fill up in Punta Arenas or Natales; there are no stations in between or inside the park. A car makes sense if you will spend several days in the park on your own or carry on to El Calafate; for a single full day, the tours with transport included come out cheaper than rental plus fuel, and you do not drive 500 km in a day.

The key decision: sleep in Punta Arenas or move to Puerto Natales

This is the question that really shapes the trip, and it comes down to how many nights you have and how much van time you can take. From Punta Arenas, the full day adds about 6 hours of driving just to reach Natales and back: that is why pick-up is 05:00 and return 20:30 on the panoramic tour, and 03:30 to 23:30 on Base Torres. From Natales the same route leaves at 07:00, is back by late afternoon and costs CLP $30,000 less. With two nights, one hotel in Punta Arenas and a full day is the plan with the least logistics; with three or more, Natales wins because you can add a second park day (Base Torres, Grey Glacier) and, if the idea is to hike the W, it is the only base.

 • Panoramic tour — from Punta Arenas CLP $90,000, pick-up 05:00, back ~20:30 · from Natales CLP $60,000, pick-up 07:00–07:45, back late afternoon
 • Base Torres trek — from Punta Arenas CLP $120,000, pick-up 03:30–04:00, back ~23:30 · from Natales there is a CLP $100,000 version covered in the 7-tours guide
 • Van hours in the day — 9 to 10 from Punta Arenas, 4 to 5 from Natales · hotel changes — none vs. one (3-hour bus)

Base Torres from Punta Arenas — CLP $120,000

The trekking version, for seeing the granite towers head-on rather than from the road. Pick-up in Punta Arenas between 03:30 and 04:00 (or 07:00 if you join from Puerto Natales), trekking poles and briefing at the park's Welcome Centre, and a mountain trail the listing describes in three stages: an hour and a half climbing to Paso de los Vientos and down to Refugio Chileno, the lenga forest crossing streams, and the moraine, the toughest stretch with a kilometre of climbing over rock to the viewpoint. Approximate return to Punta Arenas at 23:30: a 20-hour day. Includes a bilingual guide, pick-up from your accommodation and poles; does not include food or the park entry. The listing is blunt: reaching the viewpoint depends on fitness and weather, with no refund if you do not make it for those reasons. Check availability before booking.

Torres del Paine from Puerto Natales — CLP $60,000 (Caminos Tours)

About 10 hours instead of 15, and it takes bookings from 1 passenger. You book and pay on Tuki, the confirmation lands in your inbox and the exact pick-up time is arranged over WhatsApp the day before. The listing does not spell out inclusions: assume park entry and food are extra, as on every day tour in the area, and confirm when you arrange the pick-up.

Experiencia: puerto-natales-tour-de-dia-completo-a-torres-de — Desde $60.000

What you pay separately on each one

 • Punta Arenas Airport Transfer (CLP $15,000) — the listing has no inclusions/exclusions list; it is the airport ↔ accommodation ride within the urban area, nothing more
 • Full Day Torres del Paine from Punta Arenas (CLP $90,000) — not included: food (bring a packed lunch) and entry fees for Torres del Paine National Park and the Milodón Cave
 • Base Torres from Punta Arenas (CLP $120,000) — not included: food (bring a packed lunch) and the Torres del Paine National Park entry fee
 • Torres del Paine from Puerto Natales, Caminos Tours (CLP $60,000) — the listing does not say; assume park entry and food are extra and confirm over WhatsApp
 • Full Day panoramic, W Circuit (CLP $60,000) — not included: food and drinks, Torres del Paine National Park entry, Milodón Cave entry, personal and medical expenses, personal accident insurance, and tips

None of the five includes the Torres del Paine National Park entry. It is sold online only, at pasesparques.cl, with fees by circuit since May 2026 (full day, Base Torres, W) and by nationality; buy it for the exact day of your tour before you get in the van, because there is no ticket office in the park and the signal is poor. Fees change by season: check them on the official site, not on blogs.

Which tour to take the day you arrive

On the day of your flight, none: the park tours leave between 03:30 and 07:45 and no flight from Santiago lands before that. What you do decide on landing is which tour to take the next day, depending on where you sleep that night:

 • Landing before 15:00 → bus to Natales that afternoon (you arrive before 19:00, time for dinner and to buy the park entry online) → tour from Natales next day at 07:00, CLP $60,000
 • Landing between 15:00 and 18:00 → bus only if there is a departure within the hour and you do not mind arriving at 22:00; otherwise transfer and a night in Punta Arenas → full day from Punta Arenas next morning, CLP $90,000 or $120,000
 • Landing after 18:00 → there may still be a bus (the last one leaves around 21:00 in season), but you arrive past midnight with a 07:00 tour ahead; the comfortable move is the transfer to the hotel (CLP $15,000), a night in Punta Arenas and the full day from there next morning

Which one suits your trip

 • Two nights in total, flying home from Punta Arenas, not keen on long hikes → transfer CLP $15,000 + Full Day from Punta Arenas CLP $90,000. One hotel, zero buses
 • Two nights, good fitness, you want the towers head-on → transfer CLP $15,000 + Base Torres from Punta Arenas CLP $120,000. A 20-hour day; keep the next one free
 • Three nights or more → bus to Natales and the park from there: panoramic CLP $60,000 on day one, and another day for Base Torres, Grey Glacier or the French Valley
 • Couple or small group → the W Circuit Full Day (CLP $60,000), hour-by-hour itinerary and semi-private vehicle, minimum 2 passengers; travelling solo → the Caminos Tours one from Natales takes bookings from 1 passenger
 • Continuing to El Calafate or driving inside the park → rental car from the airport and a night in Natales

Practical logistics: times, pick-up, what to bring, cash

 • Times: Full Day from Punta Arenas pick-up 05:00, back ~20:30 · Base Torres from Punta Arenas pick-up 03:30–04:00, back ~23:30 · tours from Natales pick-up 07:00–07:45, back late afternoon
 • Pick-up: every tour collects you from accommodation within the urban area of Punta Arenas or Natales; a hotel on the airport road or a lodge outside town does not qualify, so say so when booking
 • CONAF entry bought online (pasesparques.cl) for the exact date, on your phone and, if you can, printed
 • Packed lunch and water: no tour includes food and inside the park the offer is thin and pricey; Punta Arenas and Natales have supermarkets open late
 • Layers, a windproof shell, hat and gloves even in December; sunglasses and sunscreen; shoes that can get wet for the Lago Grey beach (the Base Torres poles come with the tour)
 • Cash in Chilean pesos for the bus stop, park toilets and tips; ATMs are in Punta Arenas and central Natales, not on the road, and buy your return bus ticket ahead if your flight is in the morning (the first bus from Natales leaves around 07:00)

2026-27 season: what changes from October

The park is open all year, but the real season starts in October: the refugios and hotels inside reopen, the high bus frequencies between Punta Arenas and Natales return, and the day tours run daily. The big loop (Macizo Paine, the O) stays closed until 31 October 2026 according to CONAF, which does not affect any tour in this guide. The Base Torres trail has a morning entry cut-off, around 09:00, which is why the tour from Punta Arenas leaves at 03:30: confirm the current time when you book. October and April are shoulder months, with fewer people and cheaper bus fares; November to March is high season with everything full.

To keep planning the trip

Frequently asked questions

How long is the bus from Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales?

Between 3 and 3.25 hours on Route 9, 247 paved kilometres with one short halfway stop. Bus-Sur, Buses Fernández and Buses Pacheco run the route all year; in season there are departures almost hourly between roughly 07:00 and 21:00, and all of them arrive at the Terminal Rodoviario in Natales, on Avenida España 1455.

Is there a direct bus from Punta Arenas airport to Puerto Natales?

Yes, in season. Bus-Sur's buses to Natales stop at Presidente Carlos Ibáñez airport and the ticket platforms (recorrido.cl, kupos.cl, busbud) sell "Punta Arenas – Aeropuerto" as the origin. There is not a bus for every flight: they are the same departures as the Punta Arenas–Natales timetable, so check which one matches your landing. If the gap is more than 90 minutes, the transfer into town (CLP $15,000) and the bus from the office cost you no time.

How far is Punta Arenas airport from the city and how much is the transfer?

The airport is at kilometre 20 of Route 9 North, about 25 minutes from the centre. The Caminos Tours airport–accommodation transfer is booked on Tuki for CLP $15,000 per person (checkout price on 28 September 2026, charged in Chilean pesos); for the return they collect you up to three hours before an international flight and two before a domestic one.

Should I sleep in Punta Arenas or Puerto Natales to visit Torres del Paine?

With two nights in total and a flight home from Punta Arenas, sleep there and do the park as a full day: CLP $90,000 for the panoramic tour (pick-up 05:00, back 20:30) or CLP $120,000 for Base Torres (pick-up 03:30, back 23:30). With three nights or more, move to Natales: the same panoramic tour costs CLP $60,000, leaves at 07:00 and saves about 5 hours of driving, and you can add a second day in the park.

Can you do Torres del Paine in one day from Punta Arenas?

Yes. The Full Day Torres del Paine leaves Punta Arenas at 05:00, takes in the Milodón Cave and the park's main viewpoints as far as Lago Grey, and returns from 20:30 for CLP $90,000. The trekking version to Base Torres costs CLP $120,000, leaves between 03:30 and 04:00 and gets back around 23:30. Neither includes the CONAF entry or food.

Which Torres del Paine tour can I take on the day I arrive?

On the day of the flight, none: the tours leave between 03:30 and 07:45 and no flight from Santiago lands before then. If you land before 15:00, take the bus to Natales that afternoon and the CLP $60,000 tour the next day at 07:00. If you land later, sleep in Punta Arenas and do the full day from there the next morning.

Where do I buy the park entry and is it included in the tours?

It is not included in any of the five tours in this guide. It is sold online only at pasesparques.cl, CONAF's official channel, with fees by circuit since May 2026 (full day, Base Torres, W) and different rates by nationality. Buy it for the exact date before you get in the van: there is no ticket office in the park and the signal is poor.

Is it worth renting a car to go from Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales?

Only if you will then drive yourself around the park for several days or carry on to El Calafate. Route 9 is paved, with a 100 km/h limit and strong wind; fill up in Punta Arenas or Natales, because there are no stations on the road or inside the park. For a single day in the park, a tour with transport included (CLP $60,000 from Natales, CLP $90,000 from Punta Arenas) comes out cheaper than rental plus fuel.
