You pay in Chilean pesos (CLP); US dollar figures are approximations at 900 CLP per USD. Entry fees and park rules are set by Peru’s Ministry of Culture and can change — check with the operator before you travel.

The general Machu Picchu entry for foreign adults is S/163 (about CLP $43,000) from 1 May 2026 — S/152 official tariff plus an S/11 conservation charge from SERNANP — and it is sold only on tuboleto.cultura.pe, or handled by the operator with your tour. Tours from Cusco run from CLP $160,000 (≈US$178, two days overland via Hidroeléctrica) to CLP $779,571 (≈US$866, classic 4-day Inca Trail). The fact that orders the rest: if the portal says “sold out”, that is not always the end of the tickets — there are 1,000 in-person tickets a day in Aguas Calientes.

The classic photo is Circuit 2. Circuit 1 never enters the citadel and Circuit 3 skips the postcard terrace. Ask which circuit they are buying before you pay for any tour.

The 2026 ticket: what it costs and where you buy it

Under Ministerial Resolution 284-2025-MC, a foreign adult ticket is S/152 on the standard circuits and S/200 on the routes that add Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain. From 1 May 2026 an S/11 conservation charge applies to foreigners (SERNANP Directorial Resolution 000006-2026), so the real total is S/163 (~CLP $43,000) or S/211 (~CLP $55,000) with a mountain. Anyone entering via the Inca Trail is exempt from that charge.

The reduced “CAN” tariff of S/69 applies only to citizens of Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador. Chileans pay the foreign rate, though they can buy and enter with a national ID. The ticket is nominative, with a fixed date and time: you enter with the same document used to issue it, no changes, no transfers. Europeans need a passport.

The only official online channel is tuboleto.cultura.pe. Daily capacity in 2026 is 5,600 visitors in high season (19 June–2 November, Easter and year-end) and 4,500 the rest of the year (Ministerial Resolution 285-2025-MC).

The 3 circuits: which one has the photo

  • Circuit 1 (Panoramic) — upper area only, does NOT enter the citadel. Routes add Machu Picchu Mountain, the photo terrace or Intipunku; the buildings stay in the distance.
  • Circuit 2 (Classic) — the complete one: about 90% of the citadel and the postcard from the Guardian’s House. Route 2A is the one that sells out first; 2B is almost the same from a lower terrace.
  • Circuit 3 (Royalty) — the lower sector: Temple of the Sun, Inca House, Condor Temple. This is the one that adds Huayna Picchu (300 tickets a day), and it does not pass the upper postcard.

The two common buying mistakes: arriving on Circuit 1 thinking you enter the citadel, and arriving on Circuit 3 expecting the classic photo. If it shows sold out: the plan B that exists

Tickets do sell out for real: the 2026 sale opened on 17 November 2025 and 1–5 January vanished in 12 minutes. In high season, Circuit 2 and Huayna Picchu go 3 to 6 months ahead. But “sold out” on the portal has two traps in your favour.

First: since August 2025, 1,000 in-person tickets are sold each day in Aguas Calientes, valid for the next day. In person, original ID, cash in soles only, from 06:00 — the queue starts before 05:00. If you sleep one night in Aguas Calientes (as on the 2-day routes), you have that window.

Second: some of the online “sold out” is not real tourists. The tourism guild told the press (Infobae, March 2026) that agencies block inventory with mass holds the system keeps for 3 hours even if they are never paid — one agency piled up more than 13,500 cancellations. That is why the portal can say no and an established operator still finds a ticket. It is also why street “tickets” are a bad idea: the entry is nominative and fakes do not pass the turnstile.

On Tuki tours the rule is on the listing. On the train routes, Salkantay and the 2-day by-car, the entry is included if you book at least 2 months ahead; with less lead time the operator confirms a slot before charging you. On the Inca Trail (short and classic), Inca Jungle and the 3- and 4-day packs, the entry is always included — on the Inca Trail because it is bought with the nominative trail permit.

What you pay separately, route by route

  • Aguas Calientes ↔ Machu Picchu bus (Consettur): about US$24 return for foreigners, US$12 one way. On Hidroeléctrica and the packs you walk: 1.5–2 hours up, ~40 minutes down.
  • Huayna Picchu (2,693 m) or Machu Picchu Mountain (3,082 m): separate ticket (~US$65–70), booked far ahead — 300 Huayna tickets a day.
  • Meals outside the itinerary: in Aguas Calientes the guide usually points to a cheap restaurant (~15 soles a plate).
  • Cash in soles: local tickets, buses and the in-person tickets are cash only.

The overland routes without a filter: Hidroeléctrica and Inca Jungle

The 2-day overland is the lowest-price route. It is also 6–7 hours of switchbacks over Abra Málaga at 4,316 m, then a narrow unpaved last stretch that TripAdvisor threads keep complaining about for motion sickness and vertigo — the road sits high above the Vilcanota, so if heights bother you, take the aisle seat. Then 10 km walking beside the tracks (2.5–3.5 hours), heat and mosquitoes. If you get carsick or are short on time, the train is the one you pay for. If the budget leads and the body holds, the route works — thousands do it every month.

Inca Jungle (CLP $371,000, 4 days) turns that overland into sport: day 1 van to Abra Málaga and downhill bike into the high jungle, rafting on Vilcanota class II–III (in the rains it goes to IV–V and operators suspend it — do not count on it January–March); day 2 original Inca-trail stretches and Cocalmayo hot springs; day 3 canopy in Santa Teresa and the walk to Aguas Calientes; day 4 the citadel and the train back. Normal fitness, not athlete fitness. Machu Picchu entry is always included.
