Every English guide to the Salar de Uyuni repeats the same line: the mirror effect happens in the rainy season, December to April, and in the dry season you get white salt, perspective photos and no reflections. That is only half true. In the dry season most of the salar is indeed dry, but sectors with standing water remain — and if the circuit reaches those sectors at the right hour, the mirror appears anyway, with the sunset on top of it.
After running this route twice in a row with different groups in late August 2026, we built a variant of the circuit with Tuki that reorders the traditional itinerary so the water sector coincides with sunset. It costs CLP $20,000 (≈US$22) per person on top of any of the three programs, which run from CLP $270,000 to CLP $395,000. This guide explains how it works, how the Chile–Bolivia border is operating this September, and which program from San Pedro de Atacama fits the days you have.
The mirror does not depend only on the month you travel: it depends on which sector of the salar you reach, and at what time.
How the San Pedro → Uyuni border is operating in September 2026
There are two border crossings from San Pedro de Atacama toward Uyuni: Hito Cajón and Ollagüe. Because of snow conditions, as of early September 2026 the tours are departing via Ollagüe. The itinerary changes somewhat from what each tour listing shows, but the experience is very similar: desert, high-altitude lagoons, flamingos and the same huge altiplano landscapes.
The Hito Cajón crossing has started to reopen, but there is still too much snow in some sectors and the lagoons and other stops on the classic circuit cannot be properly enjoyed yet. The plan is to resume the usual route from approximately September 5 onward. If your travel date is near that edge, write to us first and we will tell you which crossing your departure is using.
If you are travelling in November: rains and the mirror
This page dates the dry season (September) and the sunset route. November is a different month: light rains start, the postcard mirror is not guaranteed, and the full-day listing names December to April. We do not invent a date when 'the water begins'. The November guide has that angle plus the same three jeeps at the day's price.
November 2026: when the rains start and whether the mirror is there
The Tuki route: the mirror at sunset, +CLP $20,000 per person
The variant we built changes part of the traditional salar itinerary to reach the sectors that still hold water right at sunset. That is where the mirror shows up even in the dry season: the orange sky doubled over the salt.
It costs an additional CLP $20,000 (≈US$22) per person on top of the program price, which covers the boots for walking on the flooded salt and the extra transfer to the sector where the water is. To operate this variant we need to fill the vehicle with passengers who take the option, so it is confirmed per departure.
As of August 2026, we are the only ones operating this variant from San Pedro de Atacama. If you are going to do the salar once in your life, this is the version we recommend taking.
The 3 programs from San Pedro and their prices
All three depart from San Pedro de Atacama, and the Tuki mirror route can be added to any of them. The 4-day program is Uyuni only; the two Altiplano programs add Atacama day tours before the crossing. One thing to know: the Altiplano programs include the Atacama tours and the full Uyuni circuit, but not your accommodation in San Pedro — that is booked separately (we cover where further down).

Why the Atacama tours in the programs are not fixed
The Atacama tours that come with the 5- and 6-day programs are an initial proposal, not a locked combination. Depending on your date, the weather, the moon and the conditions at each site, we recommend which ones are worth doing that week. This is what it looks like in practice right now:
- The Tatio Geysers are closed for now — the visit is replaced with another tour until they reopen
- We are currently prioritizing the Cejar Lagoons over Baltinache, because Baltinache is contaminated
- The Astronomical Tour is worth moving if the moon is too bright or the sky is cloudy
- All the tours leave early: you need to sleep in San Pedro the night before

Both the Uyuni programs and the San Pedro day tours leave early, so the night before is spent in San Pedro de Atacama. The Altiplano programs do not include that accommodation, but you can book it separately with us. One we often recommend is the Ají Verde Hostel, from CLP $14,000 (≈US$16) a night:

Where do I need to sleep the night before the tour?
In San Pedro de Atacama. Both the Uyuni programs and the San Pedro day tours leave early in the morning, so you need to be sleeping there the night before.
How much cash do I need for the Uyuni crossing?
The national park entry fees in Bolivia are paid separately and in cash only, in bolivianos. The exact amount is on each tour's listing — check it before you leave so you carry the right change.
